Surrender...and Fear

What is the scariest thing you can think of to do?

For me it’s this – surrender. Surrendering to going with the flow, especially if I have no idea where the flow is going. However, when I’m feeling creative and going with the flow of a project, something manageable and within my control, no problem. I can surrender. I can dance with it. I can try different things.

It’s when other people are involved, when I am a small part of a situation, it’s hard to surrender to what’s happening. What if nothing turns out right? What if I get blamed for everything, especially the parts I had no control over or contributed to or even had no actual responsibility for? What if someone else gets hurt emotionally, physically, financially, socially, or spiritually, because I surrendered or didn’t hold up my end of a bargain?

And, an almost scarier thing – what if everything turns out perfectly!? Will I ever be able to do it again? Will people now expect greater things of me that I expect of myself? Can I live up to that? What will happen if I don’t or can’t?

Those are front of the hand/back of the hand questions to ask. Some other good questions to ask are:

- “What am I surrendering to – the process or the results?”

- “Where does that surrender come from

– a place of fear, giving up, not trying, defensiveness, trying to control the result?”

Or

- a place of freedom, of peace, acceptance, and trusting the process?”

One example of surrendering in a positive way is when a couple dances. If the Follower surrenders to the Lead, and the Lead surrenders to the music, there is magic and beauty in the result. It’s like floating to music. Ahhhh.
